BOARD OF DIRECTORS' ATTRIBUTES AND PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The study examines the effect of board of director's attributes on performance of commercial banks in Nigeria. This study specifically investigates the role of board size, composition, meeting, nationality and gender in the performance of listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Using a sample of 14 banks and covering a study period of 11 years from 2013 to 2023, data were extracted from the published annual reports and accounts of the banks and were analysed using multiple regression technique. The findings revealed that board size has a significant positive effect on financial performance while board composition and nationality of the board members have a significant but negative effect on financial performance of the listed commercial banks in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends amongst others that board size should be maintained at an average size of fourteen in order to accommodate other diversity issues on nationality and gender towards optimizing the performance of quoted commercial banks in Nigeria.
